Address correction fee: why carriers charge it and how to check

What triggers a carrier address correction fee, how it shows up on 3PL invoices, how to check that the address really changed and how to prevent the charge.

An address correction fee is a carrier charge for fixing an incorrect or incomplete delivery address. UPS's 2026 Daily Rate and Service Guide lists it at $25.25 per package, which is often more than the postage on a small order. On a 3PL invoice it arrives as a pass-through carrier charge, often weeks after the order shipped, and the key check is whether the address actually changed between your Shopify order and the delivery.

Because each fee is large compared with the order, a handful of wrong ones can cost more than a month of small errors elsewhere on the bill.

What triggers it

The UPS guide says that if any shipment has an incorrect or incomplete address, UPS will make reasonable efforts to find the correct or complete address, and will charge the shipper an address correction fee for the correction or completion. Common causes:

  • A wrong or missing street number
  • A missing apartment, unit or suite number
  • A ZIP code that does not match the street and city
  • A misspelled street name the carrier cannot match
  • An address that changed after the order was placed but before the label was printed

The UPS guide adds that an address validated by UPS may still be incorrect or incomplete for delivery and may be corrected. Validation lowers the risk, but it does not remove it.

How it is billed

ItemHow it works
Carrier feePer package. UPS lists $25.25 per package for package services in its 2026 Daily Rates (updated September 7, 2026). For UPS Ground with Freight Pricing, $25.25 per package up to $175.25 per shipment
TimingOften billed by the carrier after delivery, so it reaches your 3PL invoice as a later adjustment
3PL pass-throughUsually billed at cost plus your contract's carrier markup
3PL handling feeSome 3PLs add their own per-correction fee. It is only valid if it is in your rate card

Worked example

Juniper & Pine (a made-up brand) ships through Ridgeline Fulfillment (a made-up warehouse), which bills carrier charges at cost plus 8%. Assume Ridgeline pays the UPS list fee.

  • Billed per correction: $25.25 x 1.08 = $27.27
  • The October invoice has 6 address corrections: 6 x $27.27 = $163.62
  • Juniper & Pine compares each one with Shopify. In 3 cases, the delivered address is identical to the Shopify shipping address: 3 x $27.27 = $81.81 to question.
  • In 2 cases the customer left out an apartment number, so the correction was genuine and the fee stands.
  • In 1 case the customer emailed a new address before the order shipped, the brand updated it in Shopify, and the warehouse printed the label with the old one. That is a warehouse process error, and the contract decides who pays.

If the warehouse also charges a $5.00 handling fee per correction (a made-up figure) that is not in the rate card, that is another 6 x $5.00 = $30.00 to question.

Billing errors that show up

  • A fee where the address did not change. The address on the delivery record matches the order, so there was nothing to correct.
  • Errors made at the warehouse. The label used an old address, a typo was introduced when the order was keyed in, or a label was put on the wrong package.
  • Double charging. The carrier fee and a 3PL handling fee both appear when the contract allows only one, or the same tracking number is billed twice.
  • Markup above the contract rate, or a markup on a fee the contract says passes through at cost.
  • Adjustments with no detail. A lump "carrier adjustments" line with no tracking numbers, which makes the fee impossible to check.

How to check it

  1. Ask the 3PL for each address correction with its order number, tracking number, date and amount.
  2. For each one, pull the shipping address from the Shopify order.
  3. Compare it with the address the carrier shows on the delivery record or the corrected address on the carrier's adjustment detail.
  4. If the two addresses are the same, the correction is worth disputing.
  5. If the Shopify address was edited before shipping, check the timestamps. An address changed before the label was printed should have been picked up by the warehouse.
  6. Check the amount against the carrier's fee and your contract markup.
  7. Group the questionable fees into one credit request. Our guide on how to dispute a 3PL invoice covers what to include.

Small details matter when you compare: "Apt 4" and "#4" are the same address, while a missing "4" is not. Compare the parts that affect delivery: street number, street name, unit, city and ZIP code.

How to prevent it

  • Validate addresses at checkout. An address validation step or app catches missing unit numbers and mismatched ZIP codes before the order reaches the warehouse.
  • Hold orders that fail validation. Ask the 3PL to hold orders their shipping software flags, and contact the customer before printing a label.
  • Pass address edits quickly. Make sure address changes in Shopify reach the warehouse system before the order is picked, and ask how the 3PL handles edits after an order is released.
  • Watch repeat offenders. A few customers, regions or new apartment buildings often account for most corrections.

A correctly classified address also helps with residential surcharges, which are checked from the same Shopify address data.

Contract questions

  • Are address correction fees passed through at cost, or with the carrier markup?
  • Does the 3PL add its own handling fee per correction?
  • Does the 3PL validate addresses before printing labels, and hold orders that fail?
  • Who pays when the warehouse used an outdated or mistyped address?
  • Will carrier adjustments be itemized by tracking number?
  • How long do you have to dispute an adjustment that arrives weeks after shipment?

Questions

What is an address correction fee?

It is a charge the carrier adds when the delivery address on a package is incorrect or incomplete and the carrier has to find or complete the right one. The carrier bills it to the shipper, and your 3PL passes it on to you.

How much is the UPS address correction fee?

The 2026 UPS Daily Rate and Service Guide (updated September 7, 2026) lists $25.25 per package for package services. Your 3PL's negotiated rate and your contract markup decide what you actually pay.

When is an address correction required?

When the address on the label cannot be delivered as written, for example a wrong street number, a missing apartment or suite number, or a ZIP code that does not match the street. The carrier corrects or completes it and charges the fee.

Can I dispute an address correction fee on my 3PL invoice?

Yes, if the address on the delivered package is the same as the address on the Shopify order, or if the warehouse caused the error. Send the order number, tracking number and both addresses with your credit request.
